BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE NORTHLAND CHOOSES 2018 “YOUTH OF THE YEAR”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Northland Board of Directors, along with business leaders, honored youth during the organization’s annual “Youth of the Year” celebration on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:00 pm at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, 200 West 1st Street, Downtown Duluth.
During the event, a panel of community judges including: Pat Mullen, Senior Vice President Allete External Affairs, Brenda Brannan, Chief Wealth Management Officer, North Shore Bank and Dr. Dianne McCaffrey, MD Anesthesiologist, St Luke’s Hospital: interviewed the nominees and heard each youth’s story. The panel of judges then selected Alex Lewis to be the 2018 Youth of the Year winner.
Alex stated, “The Boys & Girls Club has been always been in my life some way. This is the place where I made friends and learned how to be kind to people. I was bullied in school when I was younger because I looked different from the other kids. So I would come to the club after school because I had friends here. The Boys and Girls Club is the one place that helped me grow and become a better person.”
Alex will participate in a state competition and have a chance to compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.
Established in 1947, the event promotes service to the Club, community and family, academic success, strong moral character, life goals, and the public speaking abilities of the Boys & Girls Clubs members ages 14-18.
WDIO TV News Anchor Darren Danielson served as the keynote speaker and delivered a talk on “Choices.”
